Principal's Message

A Message From Our Principal

September, 2019

We hope everyone had a great first few days of school! It was wonderful to welcome all our preschool to 5th grade students to their first days this week! Just a couple of reminders about our school day, arrival/dismissal procedures, and parking.

Arrival:  It is important that your child be here and on time to school! Our playground gates will open up at 8:15 a.m.  Students should be lined up on the playground and ready to enter the building at 8:20 a.m. when the first bell rings. The school day begins at 8:25 AM.  After 8:25 a.m., side doors will be closed and students must come in through the main front door.  Students who come in after 8:35 a.m. will be marked tardy.

Classroom visits:  We encourage all our parents to speak to their classroom teachers about opportunities to come in and help out in the classroom.  We do ask that at any time you are in the building, you stop at the front office to sign-in.  All adults must have a picture ID with them to do so.  Thereafter, you will receive a visitor’s pass to enter the building.

Absences:  If your child will be absent, please contact us at (708) 795-2342 no later than 9 a.m.  We will need your child’s full name, classroom teacher, and the reason for the absence. We will initiate calls to home, work, or emergency numbers and/or do home visits if phone contact is not made.  If no contact is made, absence will be considered unexcused.

Tardiness: Students are responsible, with the help of their parents, to come to school on time.  All student tardies are recorded and will be unexcused. Tardiness may result in loss of school privileges and repeated tardiness is considered truancy.

Truancy: According to the Illinois School Code, a student who is absent 10 or more school days without valid cause. Chronic truancy will be referred to the Berwyn Police Department and parents/guardians may be cited to attend court. (105 ILCS 5/26-2a and 26-10)

Vacations:  A student who is absent from school for a vacation is unacceptable and the School District does not support or condone this. Absences will be marked as unexcused. Students who miss 5 consecutive days that are unexcused for any reason will be dropped from school and must register to re-enter.  If this occurs and classes are closed at the specific grade level, the student will have to attend another school in the District.

Medical Appointments:  All medical appointments, if possible, need to made during non-school hours.  If a medical appointment occurs during school hours, it will be considered unexcused unless a physician’s note is provided. Students who are absent 3 or more consecutive days for an illness will also need a Physician’s note to excuse the absences.

Early Dismissal:  Student having to leave during the school day should be kept to a minimum.  This is very disruptive to the learning environment and should only be for an explained family emergency or a necessary physician’s appointment.  A physician’s note will be needed upon return.  If your child goes home due to illness such as throwing up or fever, he/she must remain home for 24 hours without the use of anti-fever medication.

Lunches:  If you are dropping off a lunch from home for your student(s), please make sure it is labeled with their name and have it here no later than 10:45 a.m.

Dismissal:  The school day ends at 3 p.m.  We will make every attempt to have teachers outside dismissing students no later than 10 minutes after the bell rings. As a courtesy to our staff members, we ask that all parents/guardians make every attempt to be here on time for their student or arrange for afterschool care. Reminder that our staff may not go home until all students are dismissed.

Parking & Drop-off:  Before school and after school are very busy times, please slow down and be careful when driving along the streets that border our school. We need a continual flow of traffic on Cuyler and Highland Avenues.  Bus drop-off will happen on Cuyler Avenue.  As such, barricades have been placed in the front of our school and remain there for the duration of the school day.  Please DO NOT move the barricades or park in front of our school at any time.

Pets:For the safety of all our students and families, please do not bring dogs, cats, or other pets onto the school grounds when dropping off or picking up your child. If you bring your pet, plan on staying across the street and off of school grounds.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.  Thank you for your cooperation in making sure our students are in school every day and remain safe.

Sincerely,
